How to change your Dog or Cat food

Time to change your dog food or cat food? Many pet owners in Cyprus change their pets food every day for various reasons. Here are some of the top reasons we suggest you change your pets food:

- Your pets are losing their fur too much or have dry skin.
- Your pets have an allergy and you need hypoallergenic food with one protein source.
- Your vet recommends a brand, taste or quality change.
- Your pets are entering a new stage of life (Most pet foods offer Puppy/Kitten, Adult & Senior foods)
- Your pets need to lose some weight.
- Your pets need to gain some weight.
- You're able to offer a higher quality food.

If you do not change your pets food correctly, you will most likely cause them to have an upset stomach. This usually results in bloating and diarrhea. Some pet owners get worried when their pets have this result after changing pet food, but it's usually the result of changing food too quickly.

Take it slow and steady, we recommend a 14 day period to change to your pets new food, gradually changing the food in their bowl from their old food to the new one:

Day 1: 20% New Food 80% Old food.
Day 5: 40% New Food 60% Old Food.
Day 8: 60% New Food 40% Old Food.
Day 11: 80% New Food 20% Old Food.
Day 14: 100% New Food!

Some pets may find it easier to change Dog or Cat food than others. Cats in Cyprus are usually much fussier than dogs! Keep an eye on your pet during the transition period and if you're worried or unsure, make sure to contact their Vet. If your pet refuses to eat, if they have severe diarrhea, constipation or vomiting, slow down the rate at which you're introducing the new food and increase the transition time.

Your dogs and cats may have allergies just like humans do, they can be born with these allergies or develop them later in life. Many pets in Cyprus do better with grain free dog or cat food.
